Because of its sturdiness and durability, easily-construction and low-cost, gravity quay has been widely used in our country. Both the harbor affair departments and the construction companies are very interestied in the this kind of quay. Investigations and studies have shown that to a large extent the failure of gravity quay is due to lack of the anti-slide and anti-overturn carrying capacity. So it is a compulsory requirement of the "Design and Construction Code for Gravity Quay" (JTJ 290-98) that checking the stability against sliding and overturning.The "Design and Construction Code for Gravity Quay" (JTJ 290-98) has adopted reliability-based method since1998,which improves the design level of wharf structures.To further promoting the application of reliability theory, the appendix A of the new version of "Basic Design Code for Harbor Engineering Structure" proposes a Reliability Index Method for design of the harbor engineering structure, which can design structure according to its concrete parameters so as to obtain the more identical security level. Due to the complexity of using the Reliability Index Method, only the basic principles and general design methods are given in the appendix A of this code. We need to take more special studies and simplifications according to the concrete characters of the gravity quay.This paper belongs to the revision project of "Design and construction code for gravity quay ".The main purpose is to develop the Reliability Index Method for the stability calculation of gravity quay according to the principles of appendix A of the new version of "Basic Design Code for harbor engineering structure".According to the requirements of the project, the following research works have been carried out:(1) Studying on the method for calculating the reliability index of the stability against sliding and overturning of three kinds of common used gravity quay(Concrete Block, Counterforted and Caisson);(2) Based on the First Order Second Moment Reliability Method(FOSM method),a visualized computer program is made for calculating the reliability index of stability against sliding and overturning of gravity quay, which can design and check the stability of gravity quay through both the Reliability Index Method and the Partial Coefficient Method; (3) Studying on the simplified method for calculating the reliability index of stability against sliding and overturning of three kinds of gravity quay, a simplified formula is proposed which is convenient to design and hand-calculation.After passing the specialists' check organized by the Water Transport Department of the Ministry of Communications, the main research content in this paper has been adopted by the Appendix D of the new version of "Design and Construction Code for Gravity Quay".
