Stability of gravity quay against sliding and overturning is an important aspect in gravity quay structure design. At present, reliability-based partial factor method is used as the common design method. Partial factor method, although being advanced and rational in comparison with safety factor method, still has some limitations in terms of uncertainties related to load and material properties. For example, in the case with different fillers behind quay walls, the reliability of gravity quay walls against sliding and overturning is different due to variability of different filler (sand or stone) materials. However, identical partial factor is adopted for this case, when analyzing with partial factor method, so differences in reliability can’t be distinguished. Therefore, reliability design method of gravity quay against sliding and overturning is proposed in Appendix D in Design and Construction Code for Gravity Quay (JTS167-2-2009). But this method is not perfert and two significant limitations need to be addressed. First, because of complexities involved in calculating reliable indicator with JC method, special calculation program is needed, which restricted the application of reliability design method of gravity quay; and second, this method is not available in design with wave force, because of lack of statistical parameters and probability distribution of wave force. In light of these observations, as part of the project of Science and Technology Project of Western Transportation Construction of Ministry of Transport "Research of Reliability Index Design Method of Gravity Quay Against Sliding and Overturning", the simplified methods for reliability index calculation and design of gravity quay against sliding and overturning are investigated in this dissertation.Three main achievements are as follows:(1) The simplified reliability-based design method of gravity quay against sliding and overturning without wave force is investigated. The reliability index of gravity quay against sliding and overturning without wave force can be obtained directly by using explicit expressions, and the results are very close to those obtained by JC method.(2) The simplified reliability-based design method of gravity quay against sliding and overturning with wave force is investigated. The reliability index of gravity quay against sliding and overturning with wave force can be obtained directly by using explicit expressions, and the results are very close to those obtained by JC method. (3) The simplified reliability-based design method of gravity quay against sliding and overturning is proposed. According to the relationship between reliability index and the radio of resistance to load established in this paper, stability design of gravity quay against sliding and overturning is conducted using the given reliability index.
