To implement the 3D visualization of inland waterway is an urgent requirement for raising the level of modernization in river shipping industry. Comparing to the traditional two-dimensional inland ECDIS, showing the waterway's terrain and landform in 3D scene can not only give people more real feeling but also play a supporting role in the decision-making for inland waterway's transport infrastructure planning and construction. This paper proposes a method to implement inland waterway's 3D visualization that is by using of 3D GIS technology and large-scale data of inland ENC.This thesis consists of 5 chapters. Chapter one is the introduction to the topic's background and the main content for researching. Chapter two gives the key technologies for 3D visualization, including the methods for data extraction from large-scale Inland ENC, data preprocessing and three-dimensional modeling for channel's terrain, navigational aids and buildings on the both side of the fairway. Chapter three describes the designing and implementing methods of inland waterway's spatial database through ESRI's spatial data model - Geodatabase. Chapter four gives the development method for this system. It firstly introduces the ArcGIS Engine development platform, and then gives the overall structure of the system design, finally provides the implementation methods of various functional modules. Chapter five summarizes this paper's conclusions and gives us some suggestions for further work. There are several aspects of the inland waterway's 3D visualization and analysis in this thesis: Using the large-scale ENCs as the main data sources which are designed for navigation purposes; Using ArcGIS platform as the GIS technology solutions, including making use of ArcGIS Desktop to achieve some pretreatment works such as data extraction and projection transformation, adopting the ESRI's Geodatabase spatial data model to organize the waterway's data and utilizing ArcGIS Engine as the development kit to fulfill 3D visualization and spatial analysis function.
