The urban drainage pipes network, known as the lifeline of the city, is an important component of the urban infrastructures, and it is mainly responsible for the transportation and exclusion of urban sewage and storm water. With the rapid development of city, city limits expand fast, there are a wide range of all kinds of underground pipeline facilities, and their spatial structures become increasingly complex. The traditional management way, which is based on drawing, has been unable to meet the needs of modern city managements. The urban drainage pipe network has typical features of space distribution. Many cities have applied GIS technology to the management of drainage pipes network, realizing its management through visualization and information. But nowadays, most of the GIS technologies used on drainage pipes network are2D, that is to display the drainage network by2D models based on points, lines and polygons. It lacks3D displays to the space distribution of drainage pipelines and has no way to express the3D space distribution and the complicated dubieties between different drainage pipelines. By using3D visualization technology to model and visualize drainage pipes, we can show the3D space distribution and topological relationship between pipelines more intuitive, giving support to government on its designing and constructing. The3D pipeline research has become a hot spot of current3DGIS research. This thesis mainly talks about the3D modeling and visualization of urban drainage pipes network. The thesis firstly analyzed the current situation and existing problems of urban drainage network management, elaborated the practical significance of setting up the3D GIS for drainage network. It also introduced the three popular3D modeling and visualization technologies in detail, and compared their advantages and disadvantages. It analysis the characteristics of the drain pipeline as well as the data structure, and converted the existing two-dimensional drainage network data into3D form so that it is convenient to model and visualize. Based on ArcGIS platform and SketchUp, we built the three-dimensional drainage network model and created three-dimensional terrain scene by using the contour data. At last, we loaded the terrain data and some3D drainage pipe into ArcScene to fulfill the3D display of the drainage network, pipe locating, and pipeline attributes query, flight and other functions. This thesis utilized ArcGIS and SketchUp to build3D model of drainage pipe networks, realized the3D display and some basic analytical functions based on ArcScene.
