The urbanization in China has come into a new phase, in which the process of urbanization accelerates, migration behavior becomes more and more frequent, and the amount of migration increases with the ratio of floating population to the national population rising continuously. But in the practice of population forecasting in the comprehensive planning, the effect of floating population is out of consideration due to lacking understanding of the actuality and tendency of the floating population in the region. This research concludes the spatial distribution characters of China floating population, based on describing and analysis the actuality of migration spatial distribution. The conclusion provides precondition for a more reasonable population forecast in the comprehensive planning and foundation for revealing migration mechanism. This research aims to describe and analysis the present spatial distribution characters of floating population by the clustering analysis method and migration preference index method according to 1% population sample investigation in 2005. This paper holds that the spatial model of intra-provincial migration and the spatial model of inter-provincial migration compose the spatial distribution characters of national floating population. Comparison between the spatial model of intra-provincial migration and that of inter-provincial migration contributes to comprehensively understanding the spatial distribution characters of floating population in China. This research also investigates the correlation between the quantity of thirty floating population of different kinds and nine special social or economical factors. This research shows that the intra-provincial migration is dominant in the south area of Qinling Mountain and Huai River, while the inter-provincial migration is dominant in the north area of Qinling Mountain and Huai River. The spatial model of intra-provincial migration can be summarized as "Five Regions" and "Five Special Provinces". The intra-provincial migration behavior of the floating population is frequent in the coastal area of China. The spatial model of inter-provincial migration can be summarized as "Centers Attracting Inter-provincial Migrants" and "Centers Providing Inter-provincial Migrants". The Three Metropolitan Areas in the coastal region, Beijing-tianji-hebei Region, Yangtse River Delta Area and Pear River Delta Area, attracting floating population who emigrate from the south area of Qinling Mountain and Huai River is the maintream of national inter-provincial migration. The Three Metropolitan Areas in China have their own characters in terms of attracting floating population.
