Since the implementation of the policy of reform and opening-up, China has embarked on the social transformation, and the transformations in social system, social structure, and social form has promoted the construction and development of provincial Chinese cities significantly. As the strategy of rise of Central China has been carried out, provincial cities in Central China has witnessed a sharp growth in both population and land-use scale. It also saw accelerated changes in population migration and land use, and high centralized population density. Inefficient land use, imbalanced urban space, hysteresisplanning, and ineffective implementation have caused disorientation in time and space of spatial distribution of people and land-use layout, hence leading to a series social problems, which are extremely detrimental to the follow-up development and construction of a city. This paper, with the purpose of meeting the above problems reasonably, attaches much importance to the characters of interactions between spatial distribution of population and land-use layout after 1990 in six capital cities in Central China from three aspects of theoretical study, empirical study and model analysis respectively. After analyzing the development of spatial distribution of population and land-use layout in provincial cities with dramatic changes in population and land-use in Central China area, this paper concludes the characters of such interactions. In theoretical study, this paper reviews the home-and-abroad fundamental theories and research status of spatial distribution of population, land-use layout, and study of interactions between spatial distribution of population and land-use layout, and summarizes these theoretical studies, methods, model use, evolution characteristics, and formation mechanism which are involved in sociology, demography, geography, and urban planning. It figures out current situation of theoretical studies, methods and model basis and prototype of involvement rules, and then it concludes the shortages and future development direction in the area of interactions between spatial distribution of population and land-use layout. In empirical study, this paper takes six capital cities of central area as study objects, and establishes "one map covering both population and land" at micro, middle, and macro levels with the technique of GIS/SPSS. Micro changes of spatial distribution of population can be concluded with the analysis of population size on street level, population density, and population growth rate; urban development direction and construction focus can be figured out through analyzing changes of construction land form in central urban area, land scale growth, and changes in urban spatial structure. This paper performs both qualitative and quantitative analysis in different stages and at different levels on the spatial distribution of population and land-use layout involvement in Wuhan, Changsha, Zhengzhou, Hefei, Nanchang, and Taiyuan. Combining the implementation and influence of the whole urban planning, this paper will extract the major factors influencing the spatial distribution of population and land-use layout and figure out the commonness, characteristics and problems of the six major cities in spatial distribution of population and land-use layout, which lays foundation for later study on interactions of the two in this writing. In model analysis, this paper mainly carries out qualitative and quantitative analysis on superposition of spatial distribution of population and land-use layout. With the help of allometric model, disequilibrium level, Pearson correlation analysis, correspondence analysis, and GIS superposition analysis, it matches the two from perspectives of time and space, points out the areas of mutual synergy-dislocated development, probe into the reasons, and concludes the characteristics and rules of spatial distribution of population and land-use layout of provincial cities at different stages.
