Yanda train ferry designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute, constructed by Tianjin Xinggang Shipyard, and had been launched on 10th january 2006, up to now it has been navigating with cargo trains, trucks and passengers between Yantai and Dalian from October 2006. The ferry is the key part of train channels from North-East to the Yangtse River Delta and one of the"Tenth Five"projects of State rail. Since it has been navigating, rail nets of North-East and East have been connected. It has full important strategic significance to connect inshore great channel, shorten the transport distance from South to North, promote economy of North-East industry.During the design of the ferry, a few important shipwreck happened continuously in Bohai area, so the safety of Yantai-Dalian Train Ferry has been much accounted of by State leadership, government, Sino-rail company and the owner. Because passengers and crews on the ferry are so many, the stability and other safety measures become more important. Due to stability relate to main dimentions, compartment division, style of construction , arrangement of ventilation pipe, equipment parameter and so on, if all these questions are not resolved in the beginning of design, many problems will come forth and affect the whole design of train ferry. The author of this text is honoured to attend the whole design, and now review this process, and make additional analyses, to summarize some experience and lesson, which will be reference to design in the further. The main work of this paper is as follows:1) Stability, to improve the stability by optimization of the main dimensions and reasonable compartment division.2) Fit out lifesaving equipments for Passenger ship and RoPax to satisfy rules.3) Join the dock and ferry by trimming system, anti-heeling system, arrangememt of rail at stern and control of signal.4) Improve the comfort and safety by POD system and fin-stabilizer , bilge keel and other measures.The stability calculation in the text were all finished by NAPA software.
