High-tech's rise over the past 20 years provides the basis for the development of high-performance ships. The development of the world economic globalization will lead to the development of water transport, which will lead to high social demand of high-performance ships. And it will make ships go to the direction of large, dedicated, automated, high-speed, and green.This paper introduced the origin, design ideas and damaged stability of high-performance ships--multi-hulls (such as trimaran and pentamaran), which have attracted extensive attention in recent years. The slender multi-hulls offer the potentiality in reducing both the wave resistance and often the total resistance, but it is laterally unstable. So side hulls play an important role in the performance of damaged stability. This paper firstly studied the influence, which side hulls have on the damaged stability of multi-hulls, in order to explore the best spatial position of side hulls. And this paper studied the principal of damaged stability of multi-hulls: firstly calculate the floating state of damaged ship; then calculate the moment of each hull and have a linear superposition; finally calculate the damaged stability of multi-hulls. In the process of damaged stability calculation, the floating state has to be calculated firstly. Before matrix solutions are used to solute the equations of floating state, but the convergence of Jacobi matrix is not done, which appears in the matrix solutions. If the damaged ship capsized, the Jacobi matrix unresolves. So the judgement process of convergence of Jacobi matrix was added in the matrix solutions. And the calculations of damaged stability of catamaran and pentamaran were done to verify influence of side hulls on the damaged stability of multi-hulls. In the meantime, comparative analysises of the damaged stability between catamaran and pentamaran were done. The result shows that the transverse distance of side hulls and main hull plays the primary role in the damaged stability of multi-hulls; the larger the side hull transverse distance and the nearer longitudinal distance between the centre of side hull and the centre of main hull, the better its damaged stability and the damaged stability of pentamaran is better than that of trimaran.The significance of this study: it has improved the matrix solutions in the damaged stability; and this study on the influence which side hulls have on the damaged stability of multi-hulls has consultant significance in the design of multi-hulls.
