The earthquake break is that structure and element are broke because of violently vibrate in the earthquake process, which can't make the building support oneself weight so that tumble down. It is actively active method and important change and development of structure design concept that structure vibration control for decreasing earthquake response. Most of present researches have only considered the horizontal seismic action and neglected the vertical seismic action. However, a lot of earthquake disasters indicate that the effect of the vertical earthquake on the structure cannot be neglected, and sometimes it may play a greater role than the horizontal earthquake.This paper has established firstly the story-shear and the member simplification calculation model in the vertical earthquake in order to build up structure equation. Secondly, the basic principle of the TMD system to reduce earthquake is introduced. TMD used in controlling the vibration of structural in the vertical earthquake action is analyzed.These provide theoretical basis for TMD used in controlling the structural vibration in the vertical earthquake action. Finally, this research took a steel frame structure of 12 stories as an example, performed a time history analysis of seismic response on the steel frame structure with TMD system by EL-Centro wave and Taft wave, tested effect of TMD system and discuss the corresponding TMD mechanism and laws. The resule show that TMD system can reduce structural respond of verticalearthquake action.The research results if we can choose reasonable characteristic parameter, the TMD system not only can reduce the response of the structure to the vertical earthquake. Thus, this topic is worthy to be investigated deeply and exploited for application to the engineering practice.
