This paper carries out preliminary exploration to a theoritical frame of imitative study in the arts of environment and landscape. Specifically speaking, it makes exploration into imitative design in the arts of environment and landscape with the help of the study approaches from modern philosophy, semiology, bioecology, and sociology, psycology and psychoanalysis, aiming to make clear the development and cultural origins of imitation from the aspect of culture, and to expound its essence. This paper mainly analyzes the humanity background and principles of imitation and form of imitative language in the arts of environment and landscape, summarizes the rules related to the application of imitation in modern arts of environment and landscape, and displays some realistic problems of imitation in the arts of environment and landscape in our country.The purpose of this paper is to expose the aimlessness of imitation in modern landscape design of our country, and to seek the significance of imitation theory. Furthermore, in the paper, the author analyzes the forms of imitative language, shows how to express spiritual implication with imitation in landscape design, discusses how to deal with the communication of Chinese with the West, the loss the tradition and modern times; how to continue tradition by means of imitation and enhance regional style, sees imitation as a comprehensive embodiment of style, skill, material, structure, idea, design approach under the principles of bioecology, humanity, diversification and innovation instead of a simple superficial imitation, and finally puts forward the idea that the true meaning of imitation is to refine traditional language, to make active innovations by learning from international cultures, which is the only way to meet the new requirements of the development of modern landscape.
