Shock absorber is the main damping component of the vehicle suspension, which has a great impact to a car on the ride performance and handling stability, safety as well. The popular way of testing the performance of a shock absorber is on test-rig, which won't work out while the car is running. Based on the problem mentioned above, a new method will be proposed on the malfunctioned damper identification at random road profile.Three parts included in this paper:1, AR method was applied in road spectrum simulation. In order to validate the simulating road, the expecting power spectrum density and the simulating power spectrum density were compared.2, a whole-car model with seven-freedom degree has been built in MATLAB/SIMULINK using BOND GRAPH, and the malfunctioning analysis simulations have been done under this model. After analyzing the vibration of non-spring mass as well as the center of mass, a conclusion can be drawn that the malfunction of the shock absorber can be identified quantitatively with the random road profile as input.3, a experimental plan was designed and executed with a real sedan according to the results of the previous simulation. The tests were conducted under different road roughness and velocity. The non-spring mass vertical acceleration signals of both Forward left and forward right have been detected , and the RMS of the two received signals were compared. The consequence of the tests indicates that the vibrating acceleration value can be utilized as parameters for the identification of malfunctioned dampers.
