Urban is a center of economy, transport and culture of a country or region. It is critical to solve the shortage of water for a city during a stage of rapid development, e.g. Urumqi. Rainwater is the most critical economical water resource. As an important part of water circulatory system, rainwater is significant to regulate and supplement water resource, to improve and protect urban ecological environment. The use of rainwater resource is an important way to ease water shortage for a city.In this paper, we select two campuses of Xinjiang University (the main campus and north branch campus) to analyzed the potential of rainwater. In addition, we monitored and analyzed runoff rainwater quality on the road including inside and outside campus, and different buildings inside of campus as well. We drew conclusions as follows:(1) Rainwater is one of minor polluted resources. Different materials of building's roof have different concentration of pollutants in runoff rainwater, and different types of roofs will result in different water quality indicators of runoff rainwater;(2) Initial concentration of runoff rainwater pollutants will decrease gradually following the rain, the concentration of major pollution indicators will also decrease and stabilize;(3) Road pollution is related to the materials of road surface, vehicles, people and health condition of road. The water quality on roads is worse in urban areas than that of campus, and higher COD et al.(4) The influence on the water quantity by the latter rainwater to that of in the former rainwater is trival with long time interval, and the water quantity is better in the latter rainwater than that of in the former rainwater with short time interval.We think that the use of rainwater resource to ease water shortage for Urumqi is actually. Moreover, we put forward feasible measures to using rainwater by the analysis of disposal system and campus rainwater in Urumqi.
