The intermediate stations have adjust-car-sets or assistant duty officer, using shunting locomotive and local locomotive do the shunting work, which is the prevalent mode on the railway. And this mode has some advantages, such as easy management and the familiarity to the station yard for the workers. However, the mode has two apparent problems, one is the extensive traffic organization, another is the difficult depletion of numbers and the improvement of efficiency.This paper mainly discusses the cross-station shunting and the regional shunting. They let the big station's shunting-groups and locomotives to the adjacent one or several stations for shunting. And the concominent task is the uniform transportation of the close stations' freight car at the bigger station.Comparing to the conventional shunting mode, the cross-station shunting and the regional shunting have following advantages: saving labors, optimizing the organization of the shunting work, cooperate privity between drivers, improving the speed of freight car and solving the difficulties that local locomotive can not do. And they also have such disadvantages: the freight car of the opposite direction will take up the section two times, prolonging the arrival time; the work of the and locomotives between the adjacent stations has improved; it is not convenient to get ready for the shunting work for the dispatcher will go to the adjacent station; it will affect the capacity and take up the section.So, it is better to satisfied following conditions if cross-station shunting and regional shunting will be pushed: the capacity of the big station is affluent or the incremental shunting dynamics and personnel of the big station is less than the number of the related small station; the number of the freight car in opposite direction is small or goes out and the capacity of the section is affluent. Based on the analysis, the lateral is suitable for organizing the territorial shunting. Until now, apparent accomplishment on the groping for cross-station shunting and regional shunting has been achieved at NeiJiang depot of ChengDu station. But with the idiographic analysis, we find the concominent reform, including the inspiration of the labor and capital policy, the modification of the work, the appropriate decentralization of the shunting authority, is very important. And attentions must be paid to the equilibrium of the reform.The future of the cross-station shunting and regional shunting is nice. With the decrease of the transportation of less-than-truck transportation, the task of the route will be lightened greatly. So it is plausible that the task of the intermediate station will be reduced. Someday the stations that only deal with a little work will be disappear, only existing as the passing stations. So we say the future of the cross-station shunting and regional shunting is nice. And in this course, the district station and the marshalling station will become the main force of the cross-station shunting and territorial shunting, as they have sufficient power and advantage in the cars' arrangement.
