Along with increasingly reducing in weight, complication, the I.C. engine structure parameter of its function is influenced more and more, limit stipulation in the field is more and more complex, in the meantime the structure of function request becomes more and more high. Traditional design method can't be fit for I.C. engine structure development now, so the modern design method makes more sense. This thesis describes and analyses the evolution of structure optimization, discusses modern optimization methods, including the theory and application of topology optimization, topography optimization, size optimization, shape optimization. Study on the application of I.C. engine optimization methods is preceded based on HyperWorks. In this thesis, oil pan representing shell elements and cylinder block representing solid elements are investigated by different FEM model building and optimization methods. In the aspect of 4100QB diesel oil pan, two-dimensional FEM model is created by shell elements after geometry cleaning up, meshing and element checking. And nature modal analysis is preceded as base for structural optimization. Due to the special character of the oil pan, shape optimization is chosen to decrease radiated noise via increasing nature frequencies. In the aspect of 4100QB diesel cylinder block, s FEM model is built based on appropriate simplification of geometry modal, experimental model method can be adopted to validate the finite element model. After boundary condition is created, analysis of constrained modal and intensity is performed. Finally, lightweight design is obtained by topology analysis and shape optimization without decreasing original performance (modal and static stress). The textual and important meaning lies in application of various excellent optimization methods and combination of them in the I.C. engine structure designing. The reality proves: the combination of modern FEM technique and modern structure optimization make the design of I.C.engine briefly and swiftly, enhance design quality highly, shorten design period, and decrease design expenses. The measure can be in favor of engine design.
