Research On The Gap Space In The Old Building Renewal

This thesis focuses on the inevitable subject that there always be the conflict and restriction between history and today in the renewal of the old buildings. Different from the original methodology of the relation between the old element and the new one, this thesis researchs on the subject from the view of space type with the relation between the "Gap Space" and the renewal of the old buildings. Gap is a widely existed and special space. Research on it from various views including architecture language, vision, esthetics, psychology and so on, and find gap has the feeling of depth and the direction, across and transit, break and conflict, transition and coordination, elasticity and flex. These features can adequately deal with the relation between the old element and the new one in the renewal of the old buildings and provide a pleasant place for the users after the regeneration.Using the design theory of old building renewal and analyzing a series of typical examples, this thesis brings forward the concepts of "Gap Space" using in the renewal of the old buildings, provids the design method to show the site, the function, the shape of the space, the material and the craft of the "Gap Space". At last, the thesis evaluates the renewal of the atrium of Architectural Hall in Tianjin University and expounds the "Gap Space" concept used in the renewal of Hebei Province Library. Hope to provide an available design mode for dealing with the relationship between the old element and the new one in the renewal of the old buildings.
