With China's social and economic sustainable development, the level of urbanization is gradually improved. The urban population will continue to grow. Urban housing problem faces to an enormous challenge. We need advanced, reasonable and adapt to the conditions theories of urban planning, urban design and residential design to guide us. Those theories and history of western developed countries are very good reference for us. Of course, this is absolutely not true that we can mechanically copying the overall. After all, the specific conditions of economic, social environment and the historical stage of development are not the same. We need to choose the right things which are fit for us. And also, we need to develop those theories according to our own special situation, and turn it into our own set of systems theory.But in the end, which are the theories, that is meaningful and potential being developed, and which is practicable? We must learn successful experiences and lessons from western developed countries. And the study of the development of western urban design thoughts is the shortcut way of avoiding mistakes. We need a relatively comprehensive understanding of the development of western urban design and its social background. We should grasp their development venation and study their rules and its trend of the development. This is good for judgment of us to learn their advanced concepts.This paper, through the study of the development of Western contemporary urban design thought, sorting out the basic thread from various ideas. Meanwhile, study the development of Chinese urban residential community design. Finally, with the comparison of the two studies above, redefine the current stage and condition of Chinese urban residential community design, and forecast its trend.
