Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) is the representative of the new technology of series compensators, and is an important member of the Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS)'s family. It possesses simple configuration and cheaper cost. And it has many functions, such as tidal current controlling, damping power oscillation, improvement of transient state and suppressing sub-synchronous resonance (SSR). So it is tally with the demand of the modern electric network development. In present, it has been used in many countries, and played an important role. It is primarily in the application of FACTS. At the same time, the use of the TCSC brings on the change of the network. It is possible to bring an influence to the existing power system. Therefore, for the safely and steadily of the power system, it is necessary to study the TCSC especially its controlling system. And found a detailed model, for the study of the adaptation of TCSC on the existing relay protection.At first, based on existing research achievements, the article introduces FACTS and its developments, and current research status with FACTS, especially with TCSC. Then it gives a particular description of the structure and working principle of TCSC. Analysis the characters of harmonic wave and the resistance on basic frequency of TCSC, and do some emulation to prove its validity. At last, it introduces the controlling system and controlling theory applied on the TCSC. And we discussed the action of TCSC through the digital simulation in MATLAB.
