With the development of people's living standard in our country in recent years, the requests for building functions of use, area of structures and composite performance of buildings are increasing; at the meantime, the residential constructions are higher built than ever before due to the limited land supply. In addition, clay brick is now forbidden to be cosmically used and it will consequently exit the history arena because of the environmental factors. Based on the above reasons, it becomes the focus issue that how to choose the appropriate structural types or materials for residential constructions. There are five common structural styles such as frame structure, reinforced concrete short-limbed shear wall structure, reinforced block short-limbed masonry shear wall structure, concrete hollow block masonry structure and brick masonry structure. Which structure is more suitable for the multistory buildings? Therefore, choice of structural styles for multistory buildings has practical meanings and it will provide architect guidance for choosing appropriate structural styles.In this paper, a multistory building was designed adopting frame structure, reinforced concrete short-limbed shear wall structure, reinforced block short-limbed masonry shear wall structure, concrete hollow block masonry structure and brick masonry structure respectively, and the internal force and distributed steels in each structural elements were calculated according to the minimum standard in the specifications using the PKPM software exploited by National Institute of Building Sciences. According to (GB50003-2001), the distributed steels of each wall in reinforced block short-limbed masonry shear wall structure have been calculated after which the construction drawings and foundation construction drawings for vertical elements have been plotted.According to construction estimate norm of Heilongjiang province (2000) and Harbin schedule of prices of construction estimate norm of Heilongjiang province (2006), the working drawing estimate has been carried out referring to the five structural styles respectively. Through the analysis of the estimated cost diagrams for vertical elements in each structural style, the cost constitute of different structural styles was summarized in detail and consequently the causes leading to different costs were analyzed. In the end of this paper, each structural style has been detailedly compared in terms of the construction difficulty, construction period and building's using function, the conclusion can be drawn that the reinforced block short-limbed masonry shear wall structure is more suitable for the multistory buildings or low rise buildings at present.
