Study On The Chinese Traditional Architectural Element

Image wall is an important composition element of traditional architecture ,which can be used within and outside of various entrances for palaces, temples, gardens, ancestral halls and residences. This paper discusses the culture and function of image wall from numerous perspectives, including the artistic forms, spatial effects and the unique achievements in cultural appeal and folk tradition. More important, through the systematic study of image wall it can explore its significance in contemporary design.This paper, based on the Chinese traditional architectural elements - image wall research, is divided into six chapters. The first chapter will focus on the background of image wall research, the purpose of recent research, the content of significance research, the research method and the frame of the paper. In the second chapter, we will make a systemic introduction about the origin of the image wall from its notion, history and ancient name, rank the image wall by its material, sort and location, and make a conclusion about the Dragon Screen Wall in China to analysis and compare each other from its Construction time, material, and location, then discuss the basic feature of the image wall ,including geographical characteristic, culture characteristic and its common feature. The geographical culture background, folk culture meaning of the image wall's picture, and the culture construct in geomancy will be placed in the third chapter. The fourth chapter mainly talks about the construction technology of the image wall. In the following chapter, a detailed picture will be given to describe several different kinds of the image wall, such as Palace, government center, temple, housing and garden, and the research will be made on two axis: the vertical timeline, ranking the image wall by time to explore the process of the formation and evolution from ancient time to current situation; horizontal on a geographical criteria, according to different geographical region, comparing the two major north-south image wall by separate region to discover what is in common and the differences between these two separated image wall, and through the induction and analyze, we wish to uncover the geographical culture meaning between them ,to probe the role and meaning of the image wall in the ancient time and to study its application in modern landscape design. The last chapter will discuss the application of the image wall in modern design, such as the application in the modern public construction space, modern housing area and modern garden landscape, and put some suggestions through a compare study about the future development and application of the image wall.
