Nowadays, the Chinese society is much of a consumption-oriented society. In such a society upholding the consumerism, the upper and middle classes, who are the leaders in the consuming trend, are generally lack of the aesthetics awareness. They chase after the famous brands and keenly interested in buying expensive merchandise. So it is the same case with landscape design, many people believe that the costly design and artistic works are beautiful, because they are the symbol of the economic and social status. Meanwhile many designers are trying their best persuading property owners to spend money on precious materials and flamboyant decoration items, telling them all the above are of fine taste. so, many of such cases are a mere waste of money, only to end up with many duplicated designs which are influenced and distorted by external factors. This paper starts with sociological idea of consuming society, analyzes the changes of the consumption behavior, psychology and the coming new cultural artistic form. this paper points out that under the circumstances of consumption culture, the current private landscape design follows the doctrine of consumerism which causes a lot of problems of misleading; meanwhile compare the current private landscape design with the one in different times and its western counterparts within different areas, stating clearly the designers should aware that the consumerism is changing the public's value system, causing cultural and social crisis. The designers should correctly guide and lead the consumption behavior and shoulder the responsibility of the Chinese cultural heritage in landscape design, providing the guideline for the society in aesthetics...
