The increasing fund invested on the rural road by the state during the eleventh Five-year Plan causes the unprecedented progress of the rural road. On the rural road serving the local economy, the traffic and the axle load of vehicles are small; the technical specification and criterion is different from the high-grade highway. So the design, the building materials, the construction technology and the quality control of the rural road are different from those of the high-grade highway. Moreover, there are such problems as poor technology, little investment on unit mileage, difficult financing, a great need of raw materials, etc. Having investigated the mountainous area in the west of our city, I think the solution is to exploit new road-building materials replacing the traditional road-building materials so as to reduce the construction cost and protect the environment.Based on the principle of making full use of local economic and practical materials, we have made a great number of indoor experiments to master the physical and chemical performance of available materials such as iron scoria, scree, mine tailing sand, silty soil and mountain soil crust. After careful analysis, we managed to find out the economic and proper mixture ratio tallying with the intensity requirement. In addition, we have made lots of field tests to seek after the construction technique. Through accurate calculation, careful analysis and careful illation, finally, we have successfully designed the typical structure adapting to the rural road. The construction cost has been reduced but the quality remains high.
