It is indicated that the shear behavior of reinforced concrete frame (RCF) columns, which having a rectangular cross section and with the same area of stirrups in both principal axes, could be described in a correlation equation of ellipse when under bilateral loads from many researches. But the behavior of RCF columns with different area of stirrups in both principal directions has received little attention.Based on test, the shear behavior and mechanism of damage of RCF columns with different area of stirrups in both directions were studied experimentally and analytically. This study validates the behavior of RCF columns with different area of stirrups in both principal directions could be described in a correlation equation of resembling ellipse. A new theory which may be called"Spatial Truss-Arch Model"was put forward to explain the two-way shear capacity of reinforced concrete frame column. The new model takes the ruckbildung of the concrete into consideration. And it also conforms to the requirements of stress equilibrium equation. Comparison of the theoretical predictions with the test results indicates that this new model is reasonable and the formula is an important reference for two-way shear strength of RC frame column.
