Tan'an City, situated in the middle of Shandong Province, used to be the centre of the ancient Qi and Lu Kingdoms. It is a carrier of the long history. Now the city becomes a large city with a population of nearly 800,000.With the city as a centre, nine original places of ancient culture and archaelogical sites since the New Stone Age have been discovered around Mount Tai (Haidai Cultural District). The discovery of the Dawenkou Archaelogical Site especially shows that the district was among the birthplaces of the Chinese people and culture. It was also a place for the chiefs of the ancient tribes to worship Heaven and ancient emperors to attend sacrificial ceremonies frequently, where it bred peculiar ancient Chinese emperor traditions and peculiar ancient religious culture. It was a Holy Land to display various religions, folk beliefs and customs and to be integrated, developed and mixed together. Besides, men of letters and poets of dynasties, out of worship and appreciation to the mountain, came climbing and composed a large number of poems and writing. Not only in the past but at present does the mountain become a longing place of cultural resort for the people. In history Tai'an was honored "the Divine Land" whereas it's also called " the Epitome of the Chinese Culture" or " the Spiritual garden". Naturally Mount Tai becomes " the national mountain" in people's mind.Tain'an City sums up Chinese traditional culture, customs and wisdom, which are profound and abandunt in connotation. It has a peculiar glamorous pattern for its integration of the natural mountain and the city construction, making it one of the distinctive garden-like tourist cities with the feature of Chinese culture about mountains and waters. Furthermore, owing to such factors as the city's local peculiar "three different levels of space" culture (the paradise, man's world and the hell), the axis route pattern through the city from the south to the north, and the large number of archaelogical sites in the urban district as well as the outskirts, in Mar. 2007, it was declared by the State Council as the well-known national city of history and culture .It's always been the sacred duty nationwide for the cities like Tai'an to conserve and take advantage of themselves. However, with the rapid development of citification and the deep influence of internationalization, today the issue is facing a great challenge and an opportunity for them. Tai'an, like the other well-known cities of history and culture, experienced the same large-scale old city's transformation and modernization construction. Traditional blocks of history and culture and old city's appearance got damaged greatly. The features of culture and the city culture lessened The similarities of cities in style along with the disappearance of district culture are seriously threatening most of such cities in our country. As we know, cities are the products of the human civilization, so it's very urgent and vital, at present and in the future, for our country to preserve, develop and take further advantage of such well-known cities, carriers of our excellent district culture and national culture. It's the guarantee to establish Chinese characteristic socialism, to develop, prosper our country's culture industry and contribute to tourism. Meanwhile it also shows the establishment of the city's adaptable environment for the people and the establishment of a harmonious society.It's not only a glorious and historical duty but the requiremet of the times for us to conserve such well-known cities. Without the study of the Chinese traditional culture and local customs, without the knowledge to preserve our historical and cultural heritages, the truly new modern city culture couldn't be created, neither could the city with features and full of vigor. Now it has been the target for the city modernization to seek ecological civilization and the unity of the humane environment and natural environment to become " a city with mountains and waters".The work of conserving and taking advantage of our country's well-known cities of history and culture has been on the scientific and development way under the guidance of the city design. It has become an important guarantee for the cities themselves to be conserved. But now there still exist such problems as the lack of consciousness, poor responsibilities and protection. Besides, the state preservation laws and regulations are insufficient, and so are the preservation funds.The preservation organizations aren't united and they aren't rational, either. Meanwhile, further studies and research are to be executed constantly and dynamically for Tai'an's history, culture as well as for the measures and the thought to conserve and take advantage of the city. From the central and total points, we should have an accurate mastery of its culture, and preserve it then develop it. With concret design and construction guidance, we should keep proposing new ways of thinking and the intelligent resources for the great development of the city's tourism industry and culture industry. Step by step, Tai'an will be established " a garden-like well-known city with waters and the national mountain", making it a famous resort of tourism and culture internationally.
