The Problems And Researches Of Large-scale Residential Areas On Outskirts Of Wuhan And Design Strategies

With the foundation of new Residential System in the city of Wuhan, lots of new mass residing districts appear in the urban fringe of the city since 1998. Urban fringe has become the mainstream of residence developing. Moreover, residential construction in the urban fringe of the city now meets unprecedented opportunites with the implement of the concept planning of the residential new towns in Wuhan. But many problems also exist. For example, influence of large scale enclosed residential quarters on urban space and urban development; lag of public service facility; lack of gathering of people. These problems seriously affiliated the development and potential of residence construction. Hence, the paper takes the urban fringe of Wuhan as an example,analyzes the existing problems and searches for design strategies for large scale residential quarters.The paper has 3 parts:The first part is Chapter 1, which demonstrates the background, purpose and approaches of the study, analyzes basic concepts and put forward a framework of research.The second part includes chaper2 and chapter3. Chapter2 introduces the conditions of the urban fringe of Wuhan, analyzes the"fringation"of residential construction and the dynamics and mechanics, then points out the characteristics of enclosure and large scale. The third chapter analyzes the existing problems in large scale residential quarters in the urban fringe of Wuhan from macro, middle and micro levels, demonstrating the influence on urban development, urban space, urban cultural life and community system, pointing out the problems in aspects of public space between residential buildings, continuous facades and community features, proposing some requirement on local feature residential space and residing design.The third part is Chapter4, which draws conclusions from the analysis above and gives some design strategies from four levels: urban planning, urban design, environmental design and architecture design.Based on the combing of theories from both domestic and abroad and plenty of practical investigation, this paper highlights the circumstances of typical areas and puts forward some feasible design strategies, hoping to stimulate reasonable construction of residential quarters in urban fringes and inspire urban planning and architecture design in China, especially in Wuhan.
