The rapid development of CAD/CAE greatly promotes the progress of automobile and the related industries. Car body welding assembly line, as the key equipment in the automobile production, plays an important role in the automobile manufacturing, directly influencing the manufacturing scale, effectiveness and quality. The method of traditional two-dimensional design has drawbacks such as a large investment, a high damage rate of the products and a long design circle, besides, the production can hardly satisfy the customers'needs, thus, in this paper, based on the car body welding assembly line equipment, virtual design technology applied in the car body welding assembly design is discussed using the cutting-edge technology of CAD/CAM three-dimensional design.Firstly, the structure and operation principle of typical shuttle transfer equipment is discussed. Then take the transfer equipment of car body side as an example, the design theory of transfer equipment is studied and concluded from the following three aspects, craftwork design of car body welding assembly line, layout plan, the overall structure plan of the transfer equipment. Moreover, comparison of the differences between the traditional two-dimensional design and the modern three-dimensional virtual design are given according to the basic principle of virtual design. In the end, the modeling method, virtual assembling and the motion simulation of the transfer equipment are emphasized based on the UG software.
