Nowadays, difficulties of product development are not only come from complexity, but also pressure of time. One side product life cycle is becoming shorter and shorter; the other side product structure is becoming more complex and large-scale. These lead to heavier pressure of time on product development inversely.Product development mainly consists of four phases: concept design, system-level design, detail design, and testing and refinement. In the early two phases, modeling of product development and dependency analysis can help shortening the development cycle and reducing design complexity. In the evening two phases, capability evaluation and optimum design, system emulation and experiment verifying which can help reduce uncertainty in product development are absolutely necessarily processes in complex product development. Some key problems in product development are researched in this paper, mainly two aspects content: modeling and dependency analysis in early phases; structure analysis and synthesis, capability evaluation in evening phases. Taking example for the automotive engine and forging operation machine development, modeling and analyzing the development processes based on Design Structure Matrix (DSM) is presented in this paper. Moreover, modular clustering of system structure, and quantity of dependency design iteration calculation based on parameterized Work Transformation Model are researched.Integrating the project requirement, this paper carries out the structure analysis and synthesis, and capability evaluation of grippers. For the two-finger grippers widely used in industrial field, neglecting the joint friction and other wastage, modeling of grasp and manipulate configuration, capability evaluation basing on Grasp Index and Capability Index are presented. These provide advantages for optimum design and project evolvement.
