Mountain cities are huge in number and cover broad areas of China's territory. Therefore, they take a significant strategic position. The exceptional topographies and physiognomies decide the vulnerable and sensitive natural ecology, abundant natural resources and geological disaster-prone aspects of these cities. However, due to lack of full understanding of the mountain ecological environment and effective methods of planning guidance, many problems result during the process of fast urbanization. Specific problems include extensive urban growth, damage and abuse of ecological environment and natural resources, urban environmental degradation and frequent urban disasters in the mountain cities, which are more prominent in urban planning areas. Encountering such problems, our countries and the Ministry of Construction reflected on the shortcomings of traditional planning approaches and unveiled a new "urban planning approach" and "Town and Country Planning Act". With this said, a series of major changes in the original method of planning, among of which include space control, have taken place. Space control, as a new planning method and regulated means, has changed the traditional planning notion of basing a decision on the construction property. Contrary to traditional thinking, space control begins with delimiting the non-construction land, thereby strengthening the protection of resources and the environment. However, its concept, content, and planning methods are still in the exploration stage and the study on space control in urban planning areas in mountain cities is relatively less. In this context, the thesis takes the space control in the said areas as an object. Through its concept, content, planning methods, and other aspects, theories of space control on the Chinese mountain cities may be further studied. This thesis uses the background study, theoretical study, methods study, and empirical study system.First, the thesis, through investigations of the status of the rapid growth of urban space, investigates the problems in growth and points out that the failure of the traditional planning methods is the major reason of the issues.Second, the thesis explains the concept and connotation of space control. It begins by pointing out the special nature of space control through the analysis of environmental features in urban planning area of mountain cities. Then it summarizes the domestic and international theories, as well as practices of space control and relevant planning. According to the requirements for space control in the new "urban planning approach", it proposes a specific content of the areas of ban-construction, restrict-construction, fitness and"built-up?"in urban planning areas of the mountain cities.Third, the thesis points out the planning focus of the space control in urban planning areas in mountain cities and it identifies the land of the subject, based on the corresponding ecological survey through comprehensive ecological sensitivity of land evaluation, construction suitability of land evaluation, and the analysis of ban-construction and restrict-construction elements. Next, by optimizing the pattern of the landscape, the thesis forms the ecological network system that emerges from the urban planning areas to the inside of the city, so that it can effectively organize the land. Afterwards, the thesis develops the land use zoning and regulatory guidance of space control in urban planning areas. Meanwhile, combined with the case of the Wanyuan master planning, in which the author participated in, it specifically displays the applied processes and results of the method. Finally, the thesis puts forward concrete proposals of land control, strategies, and by way of means of the implementation of the space control in the urban planning areas.
