The land configuration of our country is complicated. There is much alternating occurrence of loess and desert in the western region of our country, therefor the loess-desert intergradation is inevitable. In Yulin Prefecture which is in the north of Shaanxi Province, the north is the Maowusu desert, which occupies more than 50% of it's whole area, and the south is the typical loess plateau, and there are much loess-desert intergradation in this region.According to the long-term planning of China Western Development and the highway development planning of Shaanxi Province, much high-grade highway will be constructed in this region. However, the road construction materials of this region is terribly poor, if it all be transported from far afield, the invest could not be accepted. Due to the principle of using local materials, the low liquid limit silty soil should be used as the subgrade-filling, therefore the physical characteristics, compaction mechanism and reasonable criterion of the low liquid limit silty soil are engineering problem which should be solved desiderately in highway construction in loess-desert intergradation.Experimental research and theory analysis of the composing of silt granule, physical and mechanical performance and compaction property are carried out in this thesis. The soil of this region is low liquid limit silty soil,the content of silt granules is high, the granules size is quit uniform, the content of clay granules is terribly poor, the graded match is poor, the granules are little and approache to sphere, the cohesion of the soil is little, the water content is low and the water holding capacity is poor, the soil is difficult to be compacted.The research takes on theoretical meanings and practical significance for cutting down the road disease, improving the quality of pavement and subgrade, increasing the life-use, reducing project cost. It will take a good part in the construction of the highway and establish sturdy foundation for the technology of the high-grade highway construction in loess-desert intergradation.
