Wiggins gas holder is a kind of complicated shell structure. With the development of economy, our country raises the anti-earthquake request of buildings. Time history analysis was used to study the seismic response of Wiggins gas holder under severe earthquake in this article instead of static analysis and spectrum analysis as the latter couldn't truly reflect dynamic response of space force structures. The analytical results could be served as important reference for the designers of Wiggins dry gas holder.Firstly, the dynamic behavior of Wiggins gas holder is analyzed in detail by mode analysis. Then, by the elastic time-analysis of Wiggins gas holder under three typical horizontal and vertical seismic loads, respectively, the trend of structural deformation and stress along the circumference and height of Wiggins gas holder was studied. The results are as follows: the natural frequency of gas holder is very continuous; under the severe earthquake, the largest deformation of Wiggins gas holder dosen't exceed the normative limits and its materials is still in elastic working stage. From the results it is showed that Wiggins dry gas holder has a good seismic performance.Secondly, the finite element model of the Piston structure which is a self-balanced system was created. Then, by static and buckling analysis of the piston the effect of different angle lean-state of Pistons for bucking bearing capacity was studied. And the results are as follows: the lateral rigidity of piston fence is great; the overall instability damage is not occured in piston when it is not incline; With the increasing of inclination, the value of the critical characteristics of the pistons buckling load is decreasing rapidly when the inclination exceeds a certain limit; piston's critical instability load is far less than the critical load of eigenvalue analysis if considering non-linear geometry.
