The Three Gorges project is a newly built comprehensive giant hydropower plant on the Yangtze River. The Gezhouba hydropower plant is the reverse regulation power station of the Three Gorges project. They are not far from each other and become cascade Hydropower Stations. In this paper, the theory and method of long-term optimal dispatching, short-term optimal dispatching and their application on the Three Gorges-Gezhouba Cascade Hydropower Stations were studied. The content was summed up as follows:(1) First of all, the paper studied the necessity of reservoirs optimal dispatching and relevant disciplines background, then reviewed the theory, methods and applications in the past few years at home and abroad, in particular, summed up the advantages and disadvantages of various methods, pointed out the direction of further study.(2) According to the optimal principle of genetic algorithm, combined with the requirements of reservoirs optimal dispatching, the paper established a whole cascade hydropower stations optimal scheduling model which took the largest power generation capacity as the objective function, the flow discharges of every period as the decision-making variables.(3) According to the run-off information of the Three Gorges Project in the history, the paper selected three different typical years, used the cascade hydropower stations optimal scheduling model based on the genetic algorithm, computed the long-term cascade optimal scheduling in the whole non-flood season, some suggestions were given by analysis on the results of the three typical years.(4) Taking water consumption minimum as objective function, the paper built short-term cascade optimal scheduling model based on genetic algorithm. Then, the model was applied to the Three Gorges - Gezhouba cascade hydropower stations and the good results proved the feasibility and effectiveness of the model. Finally, the paper summarized and prospected further study of the research field.
