In the conservation of historic gardens, modern parks are still currently ignored. The history since the port of Shanghai has been opened for more than 160 years made Shanghai a city abundant in modern cultural heritage. Spanning a period of culture collision between the East and West from the port opening( 1840) to the early days of the Republic of China (1921-1949), a period of chaos caused by civil war and foreign invasion and of democracy consciousness upsurge from the Republic of China to the Liberation(1949), a period of exploring independently after foundation of the People's Republic of China, and decade of calamity of the "Cultural Revolution", modern parks in Shanghai were charactered by various print of modern society, politics, economy and culture evolution. These parks witnessed the history when the exotic public facility, "park" was combined with culture of the Gardens to the South of Yangtze River as well as civilian life and modern history in Shanghai. Therefore modern parks in Shanghai are of particular historic interest and memorial importance. At the same time, constitutional open and sociality of park cause that historic and cultural interest of modern parks in Shanghai is more distinct than their artistic value. It is decided by diversification of the constituent elements and living characteristic of plants that changing of a park is always in part and gradually. The surviving parks show more or less some imprint of different period except a few of which were ruined and completely rebuilded afterward. Basing on a general survey of modern parks in Shanghai, the thesis chose four districts as research areas, Hongkou, Luwan, Xuhui and Changning, where there have relatively most modern parks. The thesis estimates general situation of conservation of those parks from five aspects: distribution, reconstruction, inner and outer circumstance, and existing relics, accordingly sums up the main problems existing in those parks. In the end, theories of garden heritage and historic landscape conversation are applied to have a further discussion about theory and methods of modern park conversation in Shanghai. The retaining historic landscape and cultural relics in modern parks should be based on the conservation principles of authenticity and integrity. The key is long-term harmonizing and sustaining supervision with a macro view. Management alternatives are considered and policy recommendations offered.
