To calculate the experienced formulas or to test the model by tank are the popular methods to estimate ship resistance. The former one can't obtain the exact resistance and the detail of viscous flow. Although the latter one can get the exact resistance of a ship, it also can't describe the detail of viscous flow and flow at stern. Furthermore, the model test is limited by the earthy factors, or example the limited size of the model and so on. So it can't take the test in extreme conditions. The huge spending increase the shipbuilding cost. With the fast development of computer, the profound transformation has happened for CFD in the aspects for calculation capability and practicality. Its function of simulating the ship resistance and the detail of the viscous flow is from strength to strength. Its precision can achieve the engineering standards. Its cost is less than model test. This paper apply the widely adopted commercial computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT to simulate the resistance and viscous flow around the free surface of a ship hull. The free surface is processed by using VOF(Volume of Fluid) method. The calculating model is the mature Series 60 ship which has been tested by a lot of detailed experiments. By taking much calculation, an appropriate turbulence model and turbulence parameters are chosen. Simulation results, calculation results using experienced formulas and the model test results are compared. The wave profile and velocity vector are given. Then according the former example, friction resistance and viscous flow of another real oil tanker is calculated. It indicate that FLUENT can exactly predict the friction resistance of a ship hull. For the small ship model, the computed error results are within 20%.The simulation by using VOF method resemble wave making of the real hull. The results clearly indicate the affection of free surface by comparing with the results without its. Then, it simulates the actual distributing of pressure and flow lines of the actual size ship. This provides some foundation on the practical application of CFD software FLUENT in the aspects of accuracy and validity for simulating the resistance and viscous flow of a ship with free surface.
