The method of appending T-foils on the ships exploited in recent years is an effective way to improve the hydrodynamic performance of ship resistance and surge. Though this technique has been matured to be used in practical ships abroad, it is still in the preliminary stage domestically. The flow fields around the foils become very complicated because of the complex structure. Numerical simulations can be a practical way to understand the details and the characteristics of the flow fields, which will provide guidance to the design and improvement of the foils in practical use. With the developments of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), more and more CFD commercial software boom out and cover more fields. With the aid of the matured commercial software framework, researchers can save more time to increase computation speed, improve work quality and reduce the repeated works. In the present work, the commercial software FLUENT is used to calculate the viscous flow field around a ship with T-foil. The total resistances of the ship with foils at different speeds are calculated and compared with experimental data. The results appear satisfactory, The work shows that FLUENT is a practical and effective software to numerically simulate and calculate the ship hydrodynamic performance. The present work is an beginning of the work on the viscous flow field calculation for the ships with appendages. With more computations and understanding obtained, the research on such topic will get more satisfactory results. It is believed that in the near future we will get more improvement on the related researches.
