Urban greening is a very important means to improve the ecological environment of a city. Now the biggest problem of urban greening is the lack of urban land. People pay more and more attention to roof greening, for it can solve this problem. Roof is known as the "fifth area" of city buildings. Roof greening is the most effective way to increase Greenbelt rate in limited urban space. Roof greening is a useful way to change the air landscape and embody the mien of modern cities; it is conducive to ecological environment protection, climate regulation, air purification, shade coverage, room temperature lowering, noise and urban heat island effect, water and energy saving, protecting the roof structure and extending the life of waterproof layer. Roof greening thus has enormous environmental protection benefits. More importantly, roof greening can cultivate character, change people's mental outlook, promote social progress, bring urban functions into play and establish a good image for the city.Urban environment and energy issues have become more and more serious. In order to change this situation, people are interested in all the new technology that is helpful to this situation. It is just in this situation that roof greening is praised by many science and technology workers. Roof greening which can play a very good role in saving energy and improving the environment is worth studying.This paper firstly gives a general introduction to roof greening, such as its basic concepts, history, status quo, the various functional effects, research methods and techniques, and its development process, then it points out that there is technology, foundation, difficulties and conditions for the development of roof greening. To promote roof greening vigorously and improve the urban environment needs tireless efforts of all sides. The study of roof greening effect and functions is a basic research. Without the study of roof greening effect, there will be no theoretical basis for the promotion of roof greening. Then through actual measurement of the roof greening model, combined with meteorological data, the author analyzed the temperature changes of non-green-roof and green-roof rooms in the air conditioning or in the natural state throughout summer, and made qualitative and quantitative analyses of the comprehensive effects of drop in temperature and rainwater. At the same time, by using the actually measured data of green roofs for scientific computing, through the heat transfer analysis of green roof envelope structure, the author made equal conversion of insulation effect between green roof and green roof envelope structure, compared the equivalent resistance of green roof envelope structure in all kinds of weather conditions, and then obtained the energy-saving effect of green roofs. Using infrared thermal imaging technology to image three typical green roofs, the author analyzed the thermal environmental changes of the green roofs and their surroundings at different times of the same day and in different days, discussed the effectiveness of roof greening to improve urban thermal environment, and then summed up its effect and functions in the aspects of environmental protection and energy saving. The present research will provide reference and basis for future research work.
