Virtual walkthrough technology is one of the most important parts in the research of virtual reality (VR). It can make the users immersed in this virtual environment and provide a real-time vivid experience with human-machine interaction interface. Although virtual walkthrough has been applied in various fields such as tourism, architecture, city planning, aviation, education and training, it has not been applied sufficiently in the shipping industry. To improve the current situation of ship building industry, in this thesis a virtual walkthrough system is developed with real-time simulation and interaction within marine cabins, which makes it convenient for designers to plan and evaluate the layout design with less cost. The main contents conducted by this research are as follows:Firstly, the modeling process and implementation scheme of ship virtual walkthrough system is presented based on the virtual walkthrough technology and the modeling theory, the virtual cargo ship, marine cabins and their external scenes are built, simplified and optimized. Secondly, a virtual walkthrough platform is established based on the critical algorithms of virtual walkthrough, and the functions are realized including data transform, viewport setting, illumination modeling, logic relation routes of nodes and modules. Also, the model resource listing module and advanced Cg rendering are developed based on SDK and C++ environment. Thirdly, the human-machine interaction functions are put forward including the collision-detection developement based on bounding boxes algorithm with the EONSDK platform, the walkthrough route creation based on absolute coordinates of key points, the real-time precise orientation investigation with matrix transform, as well as the object-picking development using Script programming node. Furthermore, the interactive walkthrough and fixed-route walkthrough are realized with three-dimensional displaying critical technologies and exterior equipments. Also, the immersed walkthrough is realized for the first step.
