This paper presents the research and development of a flange design for ultra-deepwater drilling risers. The design method in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codeâ…§Division 2 is used to check the Strength of the Ocean riser flange system. The result demonstrates that the flange system meets the needs for requirements. Because the design based on analysis of stresses its distribution becomes increasingly important, the FEA (Finite Element Analysis) has been considered the effective means to the structural analysis. This thesis report introduces the development, the function, the computation methods and the sub-modeling method for the FEA program ANSYS. The Finite Element Analysis program ANSYS is used to establish three-dimension and two-dimension finite element models for the Ocean riser flange system. With the finite element method, the flange system is anaslyzed. And its stresses and straines distribution and displacement map are obtained and the stress is linearized. From the results of the finite element analysis, it is demonstrated that the strength and the fatigue of the flange system will meet code requirements.
