The paper, from an overall, macroscopic perspective, aims to analyze public landscape environment of the farming-reading villages south of the Yangtze River in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and to conclude the common constituents of these public landscape and space and their spiritual, cultural and artistic qualities.The paper holds that the basic public landscape of the farming-reading villages includes natural landscape, crops landscape, human culture plants landscape, and humanist landscape of ancestral halls, residential cottage, academies, reservoirs, wells, spring, kiosks, Bridge, Tower as well as other landscape architectures; the article divides public landscape into natural space, outlet space, street space, the ancestral hall space. The natural, social landscape and the public space altogether consist of the public landscape environment of the villages.The article explains the greatest cultural factor which influences the farming-reading villages south of the Yangtze River, namely, the feng shui, Confucian thought, and feudal caste system. The relationship between the location of the villages under the guide of feng shui and the special landscape of the villages, the influence of feng shui upon architecture landscape and plants landscape, the impact that Confucian thought and the caste system it advocates composes on forms of architecture landscape, landscape, and natural aesthetics are analyzed. The paper believes that the influence of these cultural factors plays a positive role in constructing the public landscape environment of the farming-reading villages south of the Yangtze River.
