In China,a lot of bridgeworks will be springed up within the following decades. At the same time, the strain on the resources, energy depletion, pollution, number of environmental issues will become more severe. Therefore, the assessment of sustainable development performance for bridge becomes even more urgent and important. In this paper, research work is carded out as follows:1.Though analyzing four of sustainable development issues for bridge(natural resource, environment, society, economy),the bridge sustainable development index assessment theory which based on the performance of the bridge quality and load is established. Assessment index systems for the planning and designing stage, construction stage, operation and maintaining stage are established as well.According to life-cycle theory, the bridge LCA(life cycle assessment) framework is set up.2.Based on the theory of stakeholders, the questionnaires for survey have been given to people of intermediate professional title from the planning administrative department, institute of design, construction organization and scientific research institution related to bridge. Then, the indicators and criteria weights are formulated through questionnaire survey and analytic hierarchy process.3.An assistant tool(BSDias:Bridge Sustainable Development Index Assessment System) is programed in the hope of quicker and easier using the theory above. This software has many advantages such as:friendly user interface, complete guidelines. The system covers every stage for each type of bridge. The output format contains both charts and data.4.A highway bridge is selected as a case study for testing BSDias.5.A calculating model for analysing the embodied energy and emissions over the life of bridge is established.A actual highway bridge computation demonstrates that the added energy and carbon dioxide emissions during repair and maintenance is larger than the initial values generated during construction. The calculating results also clearly shows the ongoing environmental burden of a bridge is approximately proportional to the amount of maintenance required and traffic disruption.
