The vehicle around view monitor researched in this paper is a steering assistant system which can let the driver see the bird eye view image of the scene around the steered vehicle on the panel display in front of the driver. The bird eye view image is formed by transforming the four 180°wide-angle-lens images grabbed by the corresponding fixed cameras around the vhicle into the images, which seem to be taken by a virtual camera hanged over the vehicle, and then mosaicing them together. The system is very helpful for drivers to safely manipulate their vehicle. In this paper, four CMOS cameras, a piece of host processor (ARM chip S3C2410), and a CPLD coprocessor are used to build the vehicle around view monitor system. The main research work is depicted as follows:In the hardware, the large scale dynamic scene is grasped by four CMOS camera sensors (OV7660) synchronously. The output images data format are setted as 8-bit raw RGB. The timing sequences are controlled by a piece of CPLD chip. When the image acquisition system receives a command of image acquisition, the CPLD produce series of timing sequences for taking images from the 4 CMOS sensors synchronously, saving the images into 4 8-bit SRAM memories, and then informing the system to read the image data into an ARM memory having a 32-bit data bus.In the software, it completes a primary software platform by the development board MC2410, which includes operation system implantation, writing and debugging device drivers, and graphical user interface library QT implantation. It adopts The Linux kernel 2.6 in object machine, and implants the system boot program Uboot1.12. The driver layer mostly includes the driver of the interrupt in response to read SRAM, the LCD driver and the CMOS camer initialization. The application layer mainly completes QT implantation and QT interface application program development.
