Based on layout design principles and ergonomic standards of human machine interface(HMI) of main control room, optimization on two dimension layout of HMI is studied. A mathematical model basing on matching degree of HMI is proposed, which is used to judge layout quality of components. Genetic algorithm is adopted in optimization on layout of HMI. Optimization on layout of HMI and automatic assembly of layout component models are realized.Firstly, some principles are chosen as the main layout principles, which are function grouping, operating sequence with multiple operation conditions, relativity, importance, frequency and spatial consistence. A mathematical model for optimization is proposed, whose objective function is set up based on matching degree of HMI layout. For different operation conditions and kinds of components, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to work out importance weight of every component by calculating relative judgment matrix of principles.Secondly, genetic algorithm is adopted in optimization for mathematical model, whose aim is to get maximize matching degree of HMI layout. Object-orientation code style is used to code the competitive individual; the individual is made up of components with random layout order. Self adaptive genetic algorithm is introduced to optimization, which automatically modifies the crossover and mutation rates, which improves the search speed, so it is easy to get the optimal individual. In order to avoid premature that the individual with quantity advantage is chosen instead of the one with quality advantage, elitist strategy is used to copy the individual with quality advantage to next era as a new individual to compete with others.Thirdly, based on UG/OPEN API, automatic layout optimization system of HMI is developed with layout optimization method. The system layout optimization is made up of three-dimensional model of the treasury, database management, layout optimization and automatic layout modules. Database is proposed as an information index, which connects the component models with the information of database. In this way, the automatic layout optimization system of HMI is widely used in other supervisory control system by changing the database.Finally, the system is applied to human machine interface layout design on the power plant main control room. The instance indicates that the optimization method can meet requirements of HIM layout and the optimization method is effective for HMI layout design.
