The anti-roll tank (ART) is a typical anti-roll device, which depends on the motion of the ship roll to generate a moment to anti the roll. The ART has many advantages, besides its simple structure, little energy consumption; it also has good stabilization effect even when the ship is sailing in low or zero speed.First, after researching numerous related literatures and reference materials at home and abroad, the development of domestic and oversea anti-rolling tank is summarized. Then, the studying direction of this paper is decided.In the second part of this paper, after developing the anti-roll tank's VOF model, simulations of the passive anti-roll tank are done based on (Computational Fluid Dynamics)CFD. Analysis of the influence on the inherent cycle, phase lag and moment of the tank that caused by the damp board in the passive tank is researched. The simulation result shows that the damp board can affect the performance of the tank a lot. In the end of this part, simulation of controlled passive anti-roll tank based on CFD is also done.At the beginning of the third part of this paper, according to Lagrange dynamics equation of motion, the mathematical model of the ship-anti-roll tank system, both ship-passive anti-roll tank system and ship-controlled passive anti-roll tank system, are developed. On the basis of these mathematical models, simulations of the ship-passive anti-roll system are done. The controlled passive anti-roll tank's mathematical model is discretized and calculated in the way of numerical computation based on ideal conditions. The control strategy of the controlled passive anti-roll tank is chosen according to the velocity of the water in the tank. The simulation result shows that controlled passive tank can work well in wider frequency.Finally, the tank model bench test is carried out. The method of the test is forced oscillation. Through the test, the amplitude-frequency curve, phase-frequency curve and inherent cycle of the model tank is gotten. Comparing the test result with the adjusted CFD simulation result shows that the theory of this paper is right and the simulation method is doable.
