Ferguson cam mechanism is a new driving device which adopted in automatic machine that can achieve high speed and high precision dividing movement. It is recognized as the best dividing mechanism at present and the demand increasing highly. However, because of the complicated shape of globoidal cam profile and non-developable surface, making it more difficult to design and machine it. With the help of CAD software, the computer aided designing of globoidal cam is achieved in this paper which simplifies the designing process. At the same time, a method of machining the cam on 5-axies machining center is proposed. The equation of cam theoretical contour surface is deducted based on the coordinate transformation and spatial-engaging- principle. At the same time, the designing of globoidal cam via Unigraphics NX 4.0 is done utilizing the characteristic of ruled surface and being the offset surface of the real contour surface. The assembly model is formed and simulated, so we can observe the motion and engaging of globoidal cam and make a reliable evaluation before the machining.Several common machining methods are studied specially. The machining principle of globoidal cam on 5-axies machining center is proposed in this paper and the coordinate of tool center is deduced. High speed machining and improved process technology are adopted in association with the engineering reality, and the cam profile is machined by side milling. Also the machining experiment is done and verified the correctness of this machining method.Parameters of the example in the paper are chosen according to the requirements of enterprise. The designing, assembling and motion simulation are finished in UG NX4.0 and machining is realized on machining center. All these works exemplify the application of advanced manufacturing technology.
