In recent years,in composite frame a new type of frame has been presented, which consists of steel beam and reinforced concrete column(RCS).This kind of frame is reasonable and economical from both structural and construction viewpoints. The connection region as main force transfer component is key to the research of RCS frames. In America and Japan, many experimental studies mainly on the behavior of interior beam-column joints using cross-shaped specimens have been conducted, which clarify the effect of reinforcement details on the shear strength and stress transferring mechanist. However,in China many of these new joint details are not covered by the existing standards. The establishment of design procedures for RCS joints and systems is an urgent necessity. In order to solve these problems, this thesis uses the nonlinear three-dimensional finite element method to analyse RCS beam-column joints, and mainly deals with the aspects as below:Based on the American test results for RCS joints, analysis and study are mentioned about the proportioning and detailing of these joints, and the effect of the interaction of the structural steel and reinforced concrete components. This thesis introduces the American guidelines for the design of beam-column moment resisting joints in composite framed structures, which are for calculating the joint strength and for detailing stiffeners and reinforcement for interior and exterior moment connections between steel beams and reinforced concrete columns.Three frame specimens with reinforced concrete columns and steel beams, which have different beam-column joint detailing, are analyzed using the nonlinear three-dimensional ANSYS finite element method. The failure process are understand by analytical results of the stress-strain relationship of the beam-column joints, and verify the stress transferring mechanist.Based on the contrast analysis of the results of ANSYS finite element simulation, the American guidelines and chinese standards for the design of SRC frame, analysis and discussion are mentioned about the definition and estimation of the component strength of the joint. This thesis introduces an amended design formula, and fully takes account the effect of ratio of axial compression stress to strength. Some effective design suggestions are given as a reference to the structural engineer.
