The rural and township area in our country is a typical area with many earthquakes. According to the investigation of damage from the scene, the necessary anti-seismic measures can not be guaranteed in rural areas because of economic underdevelopment and limited financial capability of farmers. In addition, as unreasonable customary of the traditional construction, small earthquakes always lead to great destruction in the vast rural areas. This makes rural residence severely damaged and substantial casualties and economic losses. In the process of anti-seismic and fortification condition survey of Hunan rural residence,we found there are still a fairly large proportion of Chuandou wood structures in the Southwest Hunan region (mainly in mountain area). In order to study the seismic performance of wooden structures house and seismic strengthing measures of low-cost measures, shaking table test of 1:2 Chuandou wooden structure model and strengthing model were made so that we can observe the seismic response of the models, study changes of sesmic characteristics in a simulated earthquake action and study its seismic performance. The results show that the acceleration response of the upper part of the structure decreased apparently because of small overall stiffness of the wooden structure house owning to its ductility of the timber and mortise nodes and the structure of wooden columns floating on cornerstone. However, when the sesmic effect of the upper part of the structure decreased, the displacement response of it increased. Even more the structure collapsed with excessive deformation under the effect of big earthquake, so necessary measures must be added to avoid excessive deformation in high intensity region. In this paper, the original vertical wall of wooden structure house is replaced by inclined wall, which was nailed on the wood columns and beams so as to increase its lateral stiffness and reduce the displacement response in relatively easy way. Shaking table test of the wood structure house after the seismic reinforcement was tested in the same way so that we can observe that acceleration response reduced in the upper part of the structure after reinforcement but the displacement response was not as excessive as that before reinforcement especially under strong earthquakes. That is to say, the displacement difference between the top and the end of columns had been effectively controlled and the effect of reinforcement was significant. At the final a number of other economically viable anti-seismic measures have been raised in the article.
