Based on the definition of urban transformation, the author worked over transformation of cities in west China in the perspectives of urban economic transformation based on industrial structures, urbanization and the organization of urban system during transition times. Comparative study and mathematical methods are used to come to conclusions.Based on researches, conclusions are as follows:(1) Based on industrial structures of both production value and employment, upgrading is the main trend in cities in west China and the trend is weakening, however, the distribution of industrial structures of production value is mainly to the two ends but that of industrial structure of employment doesn't change quickly; the discrete degree between those two structures decline quickly and then increases a little, moreover, the industries of cities in west China are not greatly beneficial to employment; there are great differences among industrial structures of northwestern cities, their work is mostly divided based on low-level industries, and high-level services are mainly in key cities.(2) Among all the cities in west China, the number of cities characterized by migration replacement, balanced development and anaphase expanding are all increasing, and that of the cities characterized by anaphase tradition is decreasing; the similarity among western provinces is low, that among the southwestern provinces are higher and the urbanization of Shannxi province is the most different from the others, moreover, population are all greatly centralized in all the western provinces; among all the cities in western China, urbanization of mid-sized cities and big cities are more sensitive to the increase of per capita GDP than mega cities and small cities, the process of urbanization in northwestern cities falls behind that in southwestern cities and it is a strengthening trend that urban growth in southwestern cities is better than that in northwestern cities. (3) The characters of distributions of industrial population in cities in west China are more complex than those of all Chinese cities, even that distributions of population of several industry in west China must be simulated by quntic or tricubic models; Hierarchical level based on the distribution of GDP of cities in west China is increasing unsteadinessly, which is similar to that of all cities in China; however, hierarchical level based on the distribution of population of cities in west China is under a trend of greatly unsteadiness increasing, which is different from that of all cities in China. Finally, based on the research on transformation of cities in west China, the author bring up several suggestions on urban planning, which are multivariant design, conceptualization and strategies, paying attention to relations of cities, urban governance, macro and micro angle of planning research and compact strategy respectively. This studies will be a supplement for Chinese urban studies especially research on urban transformation. The results can be used for the guideline of urban planning and decision making, so it can be beneficial to sustainable development of cities in west China.
