The calamity on the rural housing collapse in Wenchuan earthquake taught us a painful lesson that there are huge and hidden dangers in rural residential structure system although the policy of Building a New Socialist Countryside has been carried for a long time. In term of this situation, for avoiding similar disaster, the author investigated the rural residential structure systems, the policies and its implementation status about the rural housing construction as well as the relevant problems. The author also summed up the research data and gave recommendations in order to provide helps in rural housing construction policies.According to the results of investigation, the situation of fast-growing wood resources in North of Jiangsu province and the present studies on using fast-growing wood resources, we know that wood-frame wood structures using fast-growing wood is a ideal housing system to be popularized in rural areas of Jiangsu province. In order to know the aseismic performance of the wood-frame shear walls in it , six shear walls, which were made in accordance with Code for Design of Timber Structures(GB50005-2003) and the walls of a pilot house made in Nanjing Forestry University, was tested under monotonic load and cyclic load. As a result, the date about the internal force of anchor bolt, the ductility of shear wall, the uplift of the studs, the energy consumption of shear walls, the lateral force resisting rigidity and the relevant information was got. Following these, the comparison between the ultimate load of the test specimens and the seismic-action standard value of first-floor walls in the pilot house calculated from equivalent base shear method show the aseismic performance of the test specimen is greatly over the requirement of Code for Design of Timber Structures. By it, we know that wood-frame wood shear walls have excellent aseismic performance and wood-frame wood shear houses are steady and reliable residential style to be popularized in rural areas. This paper also presents a wood-frame shear wall testing programs including design and fabrication of specimens, setup of testing frame and apparatus and the selection of load protocols. The final test results show: 1) The load-displacement envelope curves of the cyclic tests are similar to the monotonic tests. 2) The failure modes of the shear walls are mainly the failure of nail connections and the uplift of end studs. 3) The vertical load applied on the top of shear walls can dramatically improve the structural performances of shear walls. As the last part of this paper, ANASYS software is used in the shear walls modeling to predict the shear wall behavior through mathematical modeling. And the result of analysis show fair agreement with tests response.
