| The city square is not only the political and cultural centers but also the symbols of different cities. As a window of material and spiritual civilization, as a public place, it's cultural connotations are very important to residents and city. Since 1990s intermediate stages, the city square has been the focus of urban construction and important way to show the history and culture and image-building of city. However, lack of comprehension and recognition of the city square leads to many problems of square constructions and unsatisfaction.First, this dissertation analyses the emergence and development of European city square, the square shapes of different period and the social culture. Seeing that the European city square can be traced to the same origin. Second, author divided Chinese city square into ancient, modern and present period. Discussing its urban culture, comparing Chinese squares with that in Europe from the perspective of the history and culture. Last, author compares Chinese square with European's on following points such as selection of position, surroundings and sculpture in square. Meanwhile, author analyzes the reasons of cultural default Of urban square design in contemporary China in order to use for reference on ideal form of city square in China. |
