At present, storage batteries are already widely used in production and daily life, particularly functioning as a high voltage source. Battery use is mostly made up of a number of cells connected in a series, but because it is impossible to reach complete uniformity in the process of producing and using batteries, this way during use, parts of the cells will reach to the charging cut-off voltage before other cells, causing other batteries to be unable to charge completely. This makes it impossible for the total stored power of the battery group to be used completely. Similarly, while discharging some cells will get to the discharging cut-off voltage before others, making it impossible for the total stored power of the battery group to be used completely. If one continues to charge the battery, however, it is bound to cause the cells to overcharge, harming the battery, influencing the batteries function and life span.As back-up locomotive control circuit power supply, Lead-acid batteries mainly provide current for starting up the diesel Engine and preparing for electric locomotive before the bow is ready, as well as provide back-up power supply to maintain the operation of locomotives when the main power supply fails to locomotive control circuit. The battery operational status and life directly determine the reliability and stability of the locomotive power source. If battery performance is unstable, it is bound to influence the normal operation of locomotive, and serious instability would cause unmeasurable consequences. Therefore, battery detection and equalization is essential.The paper analyzes battery group, points out the serious effects of battery inconsistency on battery Life and performance, in response to this question the batteries need to be equalized. Through analyzes the current equalization methods, regarding locomotive Lead-acid batteries proposes appropriate detection and equalization methods, achieve single cell voltage automatic cycle detection and automatic equalization. The equalization modules adopt PI regulator to allow current rapidly stabilized and controlled. This system displays the battery data in real time on PC interfaces, conveniently and intelligently managing batteries, protecting batteries and switching to an instructive function. Automatic equalization can ease the inconsistency of batteries, improve the efficiency in the use of battery, prolong the battery's life, reduce operating costs, improve the reliability of the system, and lessen environmental pollution from old battery waste. This system has simple structure, low cost, easily expanding, and has been put into use now.
