With the development of social economy and further speed-up of motorization, the conflicts between motor vehicle traffic and pedestrian traffic have been aggravated. The problems that it is difficult and not convenient for pedestrian to go across the streets and the traffic accidents on the pedestrian crossings happen frequently are looming large. Though every big city has made great efforts, there are still many problems. Firstly, under the influences of traditional ideas about traffic, the importance attached to traffic is not enough and systematic program design is insufficient. Secondly, a large number of street-cross facilities are not set up properly. As a result, the conflicts between vehicle and pedestrian is grave and it is difficult for pedestrian to cross the streets. Thirdly, there is a lack of management of street-cross facilities, especially underground passages where unregulated marketplaces discount the traffic function greatly. Fourthly, the design is not reasonable, the attention paid to esthetic is not enough and the design of street-cross facilities and pedestrians' demands to cross streets are not match with each other. All these lead to a low utilization ratio. To settle down above problems, on the base of research about the characteristics of pedestrian street-cross, this thesis comes up strategic thinking about pedestrian street-cross system and concludes the programming methods of mid-block street crosswalk system. It is profoundly meaningful to solve the difficult problems of street crosswalk.On the whole, this thesis is divided into the following five parts. The first is the introduction, which mainly introduces the whole thesis, analyses this thesis's research background, purpose and significance, and makes use of related research trends both in and abroad to put forward this thesis research contents and technological route. The second part is a brief account of street crosswalk, which analyses the types and forms of street crosswalk, and points out the problems existing in the present street crosswalks. Meanwhile according to the present practice of street crosswalk program and design, this part comes up the idea of contemporary street crosswalk grogram and design. The third part is analysis on pedestrian crossing characteristics, the author study on the crossing traffic demand and research traffic characteristics at crosswalk,pedestrian subway and bridge on the basis of traffic survey .Then gives out the the reasons for traffic violations. The fourth part is the planning of pedestrian crossing system,the author analyses planning influencing factors and put forward the planning strategy thought .Then gives stress research on the key technology which include rough estimation of pedestrian crossing facilitiesrational scale, flow prediction,choice of models,reasonable distance and so on. The last part is sample analysis,which introduced to Li Jiatuo area to get the planning of pedestrian crossing system according to the research results in this paper.
