With the development of the world economy and the addition of the energy depletion, the energy and environment issues are the current focus of global attention. Solid adsorption refrigeration gets more and more global attentions for its special advantages in saving energy and environmental protection. This paper introduces the structure and working process of a novel compound adsorbent-NH3 adsorption refrigerator, which has been developed. This refrigerator is composed of a cooler, two adsorbers, a vapor generator, two condensers and two flooded evaporators. The adsorption and desorption processes of the two adsorbers are switched by the cooling and heating heat pipes and there are only seven valves in the whole system. It improves the operating reliability and cuts down the cost of system. And the system is designed in equipment style with compact dimension. It will satisfy the practical application requirements. The study of this paper is very helpful for making the adsorption refrigeration system to be commercialized. The main contents in this paper include as follows:The simulation model is established for the adsorption refrigeration system. The simulation model is validated by the experiments. The simulation model can show the system dynamic operating performance. It is a reliable method to study the adsorption refrigeration system and optimum of the system.A testing system of the adsorption refrigerator is developed to test the working parameters of the refrigerator and its parts, such as adsorbers, condensers and evaporators. And many experiments has been done to study the adsorption refrigerator performances in different working conditions, such as different heating/cooling time, mass recovery time, cooling and chilled water temperature. The experimental results show that compound adsorbent and double heat pipe integrated into adsorber will enhance the heat transfer process in the adsorber. The average heat transfer coefficients of adsorbers in heating and cooling processes are 745.4 W.m-2.℃-1 and 832.6 W.m-2.℃-1, respectively. The speed of desorption and adsorption process is fastened. The cycle time for heating/cooling process is shortened to 25min.When heat source temperature changes from 100℃ 140℃, the heating/cooling time is 25 minutes, mass recovery time is 45s, cooling water temperature is 25℃and evaporation temperature is -15℃, the averaged refrigerating power and COP are 11.4kW and 0.27, respectively, which are also 114% and 140% of those of the design requirements. It has proved that the performances of this adsorption refrigerator are good. According to the performances analysis results, it has proved that the adsorption refrigerator is efficient and feasible.
